Resum:

Medicine and its progressive developments provided decadent and modern inspirations to Italian literature shortly after the Risorgimento and the national unification until our days. In the second half of the XIXth Century, a young generation of writers and poets raised to set the stage of a new popular literary production rich of clinical and hospital hallucinations. Arrigo Boito’s poems (Lezione d’anatomia) Igino Ugo Tarchetti’s novels (Fosca) were excellent examples. Anatomical museums and famous anatomists were also protagonists of some literary works in the South of Italy. Francesco Mastriani recalled the name of Giuseppe in the pages of the Fanfulla della Domenica wrote about Efisio Marini and his “petrifications”. Nowadays, il medico e naturalista Efisio Marini, morto nel 1900, has been resurrected by Giorgio Todde, who made of him the protagonist of five crime novels, showing how romantic inspiration in love and death is still alive in Italian contemporary literature.
